En route

En route means the chauffeur is moving toward the pickup, and it is the first signal of the day that a run is actually happening rather than merely assigned. Most operators expect to see it 20 to 45 minutes before the scheduled pickup, depending on distance; an 8:00 pickup that is still not en route at 7:50 is the problem a dispatcher is paid to catch.

The status sits in a sequence the whole trade recognises: assigned, en route, arrived (on location), passenger on board, dropped. Each step narrows what can still go wrong. Before en route, the fix is reassigning the car. After it, the fix is a phone call to the chauffeur and a heads-up to the passenger.

En route also starts the clock on expectations. A customer told "your chauffeur is en route" expects a car in the next half hour. The mistake is a chauffeur who sets en route from the driveway at home and then stops for coffee, so the dispatcher's board says one thing and the kerb says another.

How liverybook handles it

The leg status en_route_pickup is one of 11 leg statuses, followed by arrived_pickup and passenger_on_board. A dispatcher sets it inline on the run board, the transition is written to the append-only event log, and every open board receives a trip.status_changed event over the WebSocket. On a farm-out, the affiliate's driver can set en route through to completed via their tokenised link.
